Refusing to Feel Trapped

I tend to do a lot of personal reflection. (Those that know me well just laughed out loud at how much I downplayed that statement.) I like to dig down into the why behind what I do, what I say, what I think – to understand the things that move me (and that moves those around me). I read a great deal and balance my love for fiction and my love for self-development by bouncing back and forth between mysteries that thrill me and books that connect me to my own inner workings and a deeper understanding of what drives others.

In all of my excavation into my own life (reading, journaling, reflecting, questioning, learning) I’ve come to a great deal of personal epiphanies about why I am the way I am and how to live my best life. These light-bulb moments truly fire me up and fuel me to keep exploring.

Recently, I’ve just had another such epiphany, and this one bears sharing.

I value choice – the openness of possibility, the power of weighing multiple options and selecting my next steps accordingly, the thrill of analyzing the paths ahead and stepping forward toward the horizon I’ve determined, the excitement behind intelligent risks made possible by a wide variety of viable solutions, the knowledge that the next best move is only as limited as my own creativity – to an extraordinarily high degree. Within me, choice = freedom.

In fact, I’ve connected this semi-obsession with choice to my undeniable fear of being trapped – whether that be in a physical location (hard core claustrophobia here!), in a particular situation, in a mindset, or even in my own journey through life.

The breaking of chains has been a theme across many areas of my life, and from here forward I’m going to be more intentional about not only releasing chains that would keep me trapped, but dialed in to what creates the chains that bind in the first place.

I’m committing to choose something better for myself in whatever holds me back.

I’d like to invite you into that journey with me: this chain-breaking, freedom-seeking, voice-empowering journey where we name what is in the way and embrace our ability to create something better, simply by choosing it.
